German police have rescued two hostages held by an armed assailant in a shopping center in Dresden

Date:

The officers have confirmed the death of the attacker, who was injured during his arrest and apparently suffering from “some mental illness”.

The German police closed this Saturday afternoon with a major operation in which hostages were taken in the center of the city of Dresden. The detainees, a saleswoman and a child, are doing well and the perpetrator died shortly after being seriously injured when he was supposed to be reduced in size, the security forces said, who did not say whether he had injured himself or suffered any damage when he was captured. . . The officers pointed out that the arrested man showed unusual behavior. “We believe he suffered from a mental illness,” a spokesman said.

This morning, the galleries of the Altmarkgalerie shopping center and adjacent buildings were evacuated after the attacker fired several shots. The man then fled to a drugstore, where he took two hostages, according to local media. A special police squad then took up positions as they looked for a link between this case and other incidents in the city.

Shortly before, a 62-year-old woman, apparently related to the kidnapper, had been found dead in the Prohlis district of Dresden. This would be the 40-year-old son of the deceased. Shortly after the body was found, a man threatened several people with a gun near the main station at the entrance of a building where Radio Dresden is located.

The man tried in vain to gain access to the editorial office and fired several shots in his frustration, according to witness statements. The suspect tried to break a door to get in, said station master Tino Utassy. When he didn’t, he shot through a hole in the door. “Fortunately, the workers had the good sense to escape through a second exit and get to safety,” Utassy said. No one was injured and the man left the building shortly afterwards.

From there he moved to the commercial gallery, where he took the commercial employee and a child hostage and fortified himself in a drugstore, police said. Subsequently, the entire shopping arcade and surrounding buildings were evacuated, while special assault units arrived on site to intervene. Shortly afterwards, the hostages were released and a confrontation ensued between the officers and the kidnapper, in which the latter suffered such serious injuries that he died shortly afterwards.
