Students rate their health worse since the corona pandemic. In the summer semester of 2023, one in five respondents (21 percent) stated that their studies were made difficult by health problems.
Previously this was around twelve percent. Mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety disorders were cited as the most common form in the 2023 summer semester. This is followed by chronic somatic disorders such as chronic pain and metabolic disorders. One percent finds that their studies are made more difficult by respiratory diseases or allergies; fewer people have reported limitations in mobility, vision, hearing or speech.
The survey results are consistent with findings that a quarter of 16 to 29 year olds rate their own health as worse than before the Covid-19 pandemic. The share of students with mental health conditions has almost doubled.
Contact points that few know
Many universities already have advice and service centers established. According to the research, this is hardly known: 28 percent indicate that they are familiar with the facilities. This mainly concerns students with visual or mobility disabilities. However, compared to the last student social survey, the level of awareness has increased.
