Hundreds of arrests – D: Five dead, many injured after fireworks accidents

At least five people have been killed and many injured in fireworks and fireworks incidents in Germany, according to an initial police report. The fire and rescue services were constantly active, especially in the larger cities. Hundreds of arrests took place across Germany.

Many accidents involving fireworks occurred nationwide until after midnight. Five people lost their lives. South-west of Paderborn, a 24-year-old died while holding a firecracker.

According to the situation center of the Ministry of the Interior, two deaths also occurred in Saxony. A man died after a homemade firework exploded in Hamburg. Another person was fatally injured in northern Brandenburg during the night.

In Pirna, Saxony, a 16-year-old seriously injured his hand when an illegal firework exploded on New Year’s Eve. The police in Frankfurt reported several injuries from fireworks. In Berlin, the Berlin Accident Hospital in Marzahn reported eight “gunfire victims” with serious hand injuries shortly before 1 a.m.

Attacks on emergency services and storm warnings
Police also reported attacks on emergency services – for example in Cologne. A police spokeswoman told the German Press Agency that rescuers and police officers had been shot with fireworks during operations. It is still unclear whether there were any injuries. Also in Leipzig, about fifty people attacked the police with fireworks and bottles.

Riots in Munich
According to police, several hundred people rioted in Munich on New Year’s Eve and attacked police officers. A police spokeswoman spoke of an estimated 200 to 300 people from the left spectrum on the Wittelsbacher Bridge. For example, objects were set on fire and thrown at officers.
