A severe winter storm with snow and freezing temperatures hit large parts of the US on Monday. Severe weather warnings apply to about 60 million residents in more than a dozen states, US media reported, citing meteorologists. The cold front extends from the Midwest to the East Coast. Kansas and Missouri were particularly hard hit, where up to 10 inches of snow fell.
The heaviest snowfall in a decade is expected in some regions, according to the weather service. Ten degrees below zero were measured locally. Winter storm warnings also apply to the capital Washington, where Donald Trump’s victory in the presidential election will be confirmed in the US Congress today.
Police reported hundreds of car accidents on slick roads across the country, with many motorists trapped in their cars by snow. As a precaution, many schools remained closed. About 1,700 flights were canceled Sunday evening (local time) at airports in the affected states, CNN reported.
State of emergency in several states
There was a power outage in many places due to damaged pipes. According to the website Poweroutage.us, about 200,000 households in the affected states were without electricity. A state of emergency has been declared in seven states: Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Arkansas, Missouri, Maryland and parts of New Jersey. The weather service also warned several million people about snowstorms – that’s what heavy snowstorms with sharp drops in temperature are called in the US.
