In a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives that passed without incident, the legislature declared that Trump received 312 votes in the Electoral College, while his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, received 226 votes.
Harris, who as US vice president is also president of the Senate, presided over the hearing and announced the results.
The certification was a merit process that took just 30 minutes, the time lawmakers spent reading and tallying the results from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Contrast with four years ago
Today’s session will only go down in history for its contrast with that of four years ago, when a mob of Trump supporters stormed Congress to prevent lawmakers from certifying the victory of then-winner, still-president Joe Biden authenticate.
Furthermore, 147 Republican lawmakers then took advantage of the mechanisms provided by the procedure to raise various objections to the results and also attempt to prevent Biden’s certification.
Today, not a single lawmaker, Democrat or Republican, raised a single objection.
Loudly announcing Trump’s victory — and their own defeat — dozens of Republican lawmakers have erupted in applause and cheers.
