For the first time, someone in the US has died after being infected with the H5N1 bird flu virus. The person also had other health problems, the Louisiana health authority announced on Monday.
The over 65-year-old has contact with both wild birds and a flock in his garden. The authority did not provide further details. She had already reported in December that the patient was infected with H5N1 and was seriously ill (see video above). He was also the first person in the US to suffer from such a serious illness.
Risk to the general population low
Avian flu is currently widespread among wild birds around the world, and numerous wild mammals are also becoming infected. The virus has recently led to outbreaks on poultry and dairy farms in the United States. The extent of this is still largely unclear due to a lack of data.
The health authority recorded mild infections, mainly among employees of relevant companies. Human-to-human transmission has not yet been proven. The CDC continues to assess the risk to the general population as low. Recently there have been about 60 human cases, including a child for the first time.
