The driver of a Mercedes experienced heated scenes on Altmannsdorfer Strasse in Vienna on Monday afternoon: his car went up in flames – which also threatened to spread to an adjacent residential building. The professional fire brigade could prevent worse.
Dramatic scenes in Altmannsdorfer Straße: As shown in a video from “Krone”, a car may have been set on fire in the middle of the street. After the driver steered his burning car onto the sidewalk, he left it. The burned-out car was probably a slightly older Mercedes. It is still unclear whether this is the reason why the car caught fire.
Firefighters had to be deployed using breathing apparatus
In any case, the Viennese professional fire brigade was deployed to Altmannsdorfer Straße with a total of eleven men on Monday afternoon shortly before 5 p.m. At that moment the car was already completely on fire. As Chief Fire Officer of the Vienna Fire Department Christian Feiler confirmed, the Florianis had to extinguish the fire using respiratory protection with a so-called rapid attack unit, despite the fire taking place outdoors. The operation took about an hour.
The facade of the house was very hot
The facade of the adjacent house was also checked with a thermal imaging camera. Since the wall was very hot, it was cooled and the adjacent apartments were checked. What was left of the car was then towed away. The driver of the Mercedes was probably unharmed in the inferno.
