Rescue in the Mediterranean: Woman gives birth to baby on refugee boat

Date:

The crossing from West Africa across the Atlantic Ocean to the Canary Islands is considered one of the most dangerous escape routes in the world. Now the Spanish coast guard has been able to save a baby born on a migrant boat.

The Coast Guard announced on Wednesday on X that the newborn and his mother were safely rescued from the boat on Monday.

They were taken by helicopter to Arrecife on Lanzarote. The boat with the migrants on board was reportedly en route to the Canary Islands.

Maximum number of illegal arrivals
Last year, 46,843 migrants arrived in the Canary Islands without valid documents – more than ever before. Stricter controls in the Mediterranean are encouraging more and more migrants to make the dangerous journey from West Africa across the Atlantic Ocean to the Canary Islands.

According to the Spanish aid organization Caminando Fronteras, at least 9,757 migrants died trying to reach the Canary Islands in 2024.
