At a demonstration in Innsbruck, a German (56) living in Tyrol caused sudden hearing loss in two law enforcement officers with a megaphone. Now the man had to sit on the dock at the Innsbruck Regional Court.
“It would never occur to me to intentionally hurt someone,” the 56-year-old swore in an Innsbruck court. But two police officers suffered sudden hearing loss and temporary tinnitus because of him.
During a demo at the end of January, the man is said to have held his megaphone at the head of the two law enforcement officers and turned on the siren. “We told him several times that we already had earaches and asked him to stop. But he just kept going,” recalled an officer before Judge Bernhard Rüßkamp.
According to an expert, any consequential damage for both women is fortunately excluded.
Sincere apologies in court
“I bought the megaphone online and I couldn’t believe how loud it was,” the suspect, who had lived in a monastery for 12 years, apologized to the victims in court. But he never thought that the siren could actually have painful consequences for anyone.
“Everything must have been very unfortunate,” said his lawyer, who thought the police officers’ €3,000 or €2,500 in compensation for pain and suffering, including lost income and the cost of therapy and medication, was far too exaggerated.
Although the public prosecutor spoke out against it, the Tyrolean got rid of it at his own discretion without conviction and with a detour. He must pay a fine of 2,000 euros and 500 euros each as compensation for pain and suffering. It may become even more expensive in a civil lawsuit.
