The September flood disaster once again showed that when communities are threatened, mayors must act as crisis managers. Despite the great responsibility and although many would never want to do the job, the job description is often portrayed in a bad light.
Michaela Schneidhofer, ÖVP mayor in Hernstein in the Baden district, is now taking courage and standing up for her colleagues: “I am a fan of crime thrillers, but I no longer watch The Bull of Tölz or a rural crime thriller,” she believes. that political decision makers are always portrayed as ‘killing’ or as corrupt.
“Even gardeners are often not the killers”
‘But we’re not. In real life, the gardener is usually not the murderer,” says the mayor of the community of 1,550 inhabitants. Of course, as in any profession, there are also black sheep – and there is rightly negative news about them.
Very difficult to find balance
It is often difficult to find a suitable solution for everyone between the young couple who wants to build a house and the neighbor who wants to stop construction, but: “You do your best and try, together with the many interest groups from different layers of the population, live to find a solution. There also needs to be a critical discussion. And that’s a good thing, because it is an essential part of a functioning democracy,” says Schneidhofer.
Joy prevails
Yet the pleasure of doing things together with people prevails – and because of the diversity of the job you can learn something new every day. One wish remains: “I would like a crime thriller in which the mayor solves the case – or at least he is not unsympathetic!”
