The 600 delegates who attended the Social Democratic Congress in Berlin overwhelmingly praised Scholz, with only five votes against.
The German Chancellor Olaf Scholzwas formally elected this Saturday as a candidate for the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to the next early elections February 23after making a statement against the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and against the Christian Democratic bloc (CDU-CSU), respectively the second and first strength in the polls.
The 600 delegates who took part in the Social Democratic Congress in Berlin overwhelmingly cheered Scholz only five votes against.
Shortly before, Scholz, whose company is there 15% in the pollshad started his intervention with a warning about the situation in Austria, where the far right has been tasked with forming a government after talks between the rest of the parties failed.
“This is devastating, we cannot just take note of it,” Scholz said, implicitly pointing to the danger that the poll favorite, the Christian Democrat, Friedrich Merzcould break his promise not to work with the AfD, as he will not foreseeably have an absolute majority to govern.
“There are forces that resort to incitement and division as a political model,” he said, referring AfDand has emphasized, however, that “the majority of Germany knows” and therefore supports the democratic forces.
