The soldier was stationed in South Korea and went to Russia on his own, NBC News, CNN and ABC News reported Monday, citing U.S. government officials. When asked, US National Security Council communications director John Kirby said only: “We are aware of this matter.” However, he provided no further details and referred further questions to the US Department of Defense.
“Russia has notified us of the arrest in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations,” a US Armed Forces spokeswoman told CNN. His own national was taken into police custody in the port city of Vladivostok. The family of the affected person was immediately informed.
A similar case last year in North Korea
The case is reminiscent of US army soldier Travis King, who fled from South Korea to North Korea last year and was imprisoned there. The American soldier was due to be flown to the US in July after a fight, a confrontation with police and a stint in prison in South Korea. However, he was able to flee the airport and participate in a tour of the demilitarized zone. There King crossed the border from South to North Korea.
