Five ski tourers were buried by an avalanche in northern Italy on Sunday. According to rescuers, three of them were killed.
The other two people were taken to hospital by helicopter. The accident happened in Trasquera in Piedmont, northern Italy.
Border with Switzerland
The avalanche occurred on the eastern ridge of Punta Valgrande, a 2,850-meter peak. The tour offers views in almost all directions, but is rarely undertaken. It is a steep ski tour in a pristine and remote area. The area is on the border with Switzerland.
The emergency services were alerted by witnesses who had seen the avalanche. According to authorities, there is a “significant avalanche risk” in the area at an altitude of more than 2,100 meters.
