Musk’s proximity to Trump poses no threat to Bezos

Date:

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos sees no threat to his space company Blue Origin in the close relations between SpaceX boss Elon Musk and future US president Donald Trump. In an interview on Sunday, Bezos was “very optimistic” about the future US administration’s space agenda.

“Elon has made it very clear that he is acting in the public interest and not for his personal gain. And I take him at his word,” Bezos said.

Blue Origin and SpaceX have been engaged in fierce competition in commercial spaceflight for years. Although SpaceX has successfully deployed rockets and spacecraft for NASA several times, Blue Origin is still in the development phase for orbital flights.

After repeated postponements, a first flight of Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket was announced for Monday.

Musk has an advantage
Musk’s appointment to Trump’s economic advisory board and Jared Isaacman’s appointment as NASA chief have fueled speculation about the benefits for SpaceX. Isaacman is a confidant of Musk and has participated in SpaceX’s private space flights several times.

Musk is currently clearly at the forefront of commercial space travel with SpaceX. Commercial satellite operators, the Pentagon and the US space agency NASA use SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rockets. Competitors such as United Launch Alliance, Arianespace and Rocket Lab lag far behind.
