Iran has reinforced its regular armed forces with 1,000 drones. As the Ministry of Defense announced on Monday, the missiles, which are reportedly two modern variants of the ‘Ababil’ type, have a range of more than 2,000 kilometers.
Fears are increasing in Tehran of renewed military tensions with arch-enemy Israel. Last year, Israel and Iran fired missiles at each other several times in a dangerous escalation.
According to the semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim, the new drones have been delivered to various locations in the country. They must have a high degree of camouflage, high destructive power and a range of more than 2000 kilometers.
The new drones will be used for reconnaissance and border surveillance, but they will also help the Iranian military “fight distant targets,” according to the Tasnim News Agency.
Air defense tests around the Natanz nuclear power plant
Nearly two weeks before Trump’s inauguration, the Iranian military began testing its air defenses at the main Natanz nuclear facility (photo below). The first phase of a maneuver around the facility in central Iran began last Tuesday.
Tehran has launched a series of drone and missile attacks on Israel since the start of the Gaza war, sparked by the October 7 attack by its ally, the Hamas terror group.
