Several important personalities are buried in London’s Westminster Abbey, including naturalist Charles Darwin. Now his gravestone has become the site of a protest by climate activists.
Two female climate activists from Just Stop Oil spray-painted Darwin’s gravestone on Monday. Both were arrested after their crime.
The activists wrote “1.5 is dead” in orange on the surface of the white marble gravestone – an allusion to the goal agreed at the World Climate Conference in Paris to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees if possible. Last year was the warmest since measurements began, criticized “Just Stop Oil”.
Darwin would turn in his grave in light of the news, the group criticized, among other things, with regard to the extinction of species. The activists are calling for a phase-out of fossil fuels by 2030.
In Westminster Abbey, where King Charles III. was crowned, several famous personalities were buried. This includes the British researcher Darwin (1809-1882), whose work “On the Origin of Species” is considered a crucial cornerstone for contemporary evolutionary biology.
Restorers do not expect any permanent damage
The protest group said it used chalk paint. The restorers would begin cleaning immediately and did not expect any lasting damage, the church’s press office said.
According to a report, 2024 was the first year since records began that the global average was more than 1.5 degrees warmer than the pre-industrial average. This also made it the warmest year on record, the climate change service of the EU Copernicus program announced on Friday.
