Driven into the sea – storms in Greece: two tourists missing

Date:

Severe storms and rain caused some problems in northern and central Greece on Saturday night. For example, there were floods on the holiday island of Thasos, cars had been washed away, cellars and ground floors were full of water. Two tourists are missing on the Halkidiki peninsula.

Three men – reportedly from North Macedonia – went swimming in high winds and waves, it is said. The waves and currents drove them out into the open sea, a Coast Guard spokesman said on state radio on Sunday. According to media reports, one of the men was rescued on Saturday.

The search for the other two continued on Sunday. In addition to the Coast Guard and a helicopter, passing ships, fishermen and volunteers in the area kept an eye out for the missing.

Severe storms, wind and rain caused problems in almost all of Greece last weekend. Roads on the holiday island of Skyros had to be closed due to landslides and two destroyed bridges, state radio reports. It also rained all night in Athens and Crete. The storm would not pass until Sunday afternoon, the country’s meteorological office said.

Precipitation reduces the risk of wildfires
People are cheering for the rain in many places: in Greece, the risk of forest fires has increased significantly recently after being very hot and dry for a long time. Last Thursday, the fire service reported 378 forest fires within seven days. According to the authorities, the risk of fire after the storm is low for the time being.
