Nine years after a terrible crime in Carinthia, the police want to identify the perpetrator. Problem: Turkey does not extradite its compatriots to Europe.
In May 2013, a horrific act was reported from Arnoldstein: a woman was assaulted and raped by an unknown man in the early morning hours. The 45-year-old was gagged and tied to a tree with duct tape.
Nine years later, the Carinthian judiciary believes it knows the perpetrator – a Turkish truck driver whose DNA matches a trail of the crime that has been secured. The prosecutor’s office in Klagenfurt has filed a report and judge Gernot Kugi is due to appear on Friday responsible for sexual offenses – in consultation.
Turkey does not deliver
There is only one catch: it is completely open whether the 49-year-old suspect will come. If found guilty, he risks immediate arrest. If he does not appear, a European arrest warrant is issued against the alleged rapist. To do this, he must be caught at a border. Because Turkey doesn’t deliver.
