Small ski areas are increasingly disappearing from the map. It is not unusual for them to be at low elevations where the lack of snow causes problems. We asked Styrian operators to look through the history books – and watch how the municipality of Grundlsee is fighting for its tow lift.
For many Styrians these are just childhood memories: a multitude of abandoned ski areas spread across the country. But what are the stories behind it? The Wimmer lifts in Purgstall near Eggersdorf have only been on the list since 2023. The snow at 500 meters forced them to give up, says Roswitha Wimmer: “You can pump in the money, but you can’t buy the cold.”
