A serious accident occurred in a ski resort in the Pyrenees in Spain: a chairlift crashed and more than thirty people were injured. Numerous rescuers and several helicopters are in action in the Astún ski area – see video above.
17 people are believed to have been seriously injured, nine of whom are in critical condition. Hospitals near the ski area were alerted.

The victims are said to have fallen from a height of 15 meters, the Guardia Civil reports. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, the company said. According to initial findings, a problem with the suspension cable could have caused a chairlift to become loose.
The ski station was immediately closed and numerous rescue measures are underway. According to media reports, several ambulances and four helicopters were deployed to rescue those affected and take them to surrounding hospitals. The nationalities of the injured were initially not disclosed.
