It would be routine work that a farmer wanted to do on his field in the municipality of Prottes in the district of Gänserndorf (Lower Austria). But it ended with the deployment of the mine clearance service. Because what the farmer did not know when he was working in the field: he drove his tractor on a former Russian artillery position.
So he was quite surprised at first when he discovered four launch grenades with his heavy vehicle. Fearing that there might be more hidden in the ground, he warned EWC ammunition recovery experts. They surveyed the building and were able to quickly determine the importance of the area during the Second World War.
“20 less potential life threats”
And the farmer’s concern was more than justified, as it turned out a little later. No fewer than 16 live grenades were discovered. They were recovered and handed over to the demining service, along with the four war relics previously discovered. “Prottes now has 20 fewer potential life threats,” said company chief Andreas Herrmann.
