Due to a threatening message, Graz’s main station was evacuated on Sunday evening. Train traffic was stopped and the police were on site with demolition experts. After more than three hours the all-clear was given.
Major operation on Sunday afternoon at Graz main station. After receiving a threatening message, police evacuated the area, they announced on the social media platform Bluesky: “Numerous police patrols are already on site. The evacuation of the area is underway. “There are no more buses running to the station area,” it says. Train traffic was also stopped. Explosives experts from the police (SKO) were on site and sniffer dogs also assisted in the search.
Backpack discovered – “no danger”
Around 6:30 p.m. the message came: “A backpack was discovered near a train platform that had apparently been left behind. Our explosives experts will investigate further.” Almost an hour later it was clear: “The backpack poses no danger. A search with X-ray equipment was negative.”
At 8:15 p.m. the time had come: “All searches have been completed. No dangerous objects could be found. The bans are now lifted. We wish you a safe journey and a pleasant evening,” the police wrote on Bluesky.
It is still unclear whether the threat is related to a similar incident in September 2024, when Graz’s main station also had to be closed. “The investigation into the creator of the current threatening message is already underway,” the police said.
