Tragic traffic accident Monday morning in East Tyrol: An elderly couple (78 and 83 years old) drove their car off the road near Assling and crashed into a concrete drain. The accident car was discovered by the fire brigade, who were on their way to another operation. Unfortunately, all help came too late for both prisoners.
The terrible accident happened around 8:45 am. The 83-year-old resident, accompanied by his wife, was driving his car on the Drautalstrasse (B100) from Mittewald towards Thal when he left the road at Assling on a left bend.

“The car slid down the dike and ended up head-on into a concrete drain in the ditch,” the police said.
All help came too late for the prisoners
The 83-year-old and his 78-year-old passenger were rescued from the wreckage of the car by Assling Volunteer Fire Brigade. But all help came too late. “Despite immediate resuscitation measures, the two occupants of the vehicle died at the scene of the accident,” investigators continued.
Firefighters discovered wreckage
Ironically, it was the Assling Volunteer Fire Department who found the crashed car and the two trapped people. “We were actually on our way to another assignment and saw the car break down upon arrival. “That was only possible because we drove in the truck,” FF commander Manuel Oberwasserlechner told the “Krone”. The Florianis then set the rescue chain in motion.
During the operation and cleaning work, the B100 Drautalstraße was closed to all traffic.
