A dramatic operation kept the Schwechat volunteer fire brigade on edge on Tuesday evening: a horse had fallen into a workshop pit and could only be freed with heavy equipment. Emergency services fought for the animal’s life, but their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.
The Schwechat volunteer fire brigade was alerted around 6:30 PM: a 33-year-old horse had broken into a workshop pit of a riding school and could no longer free itself. The incident commanders immediately investigated the situation on site. Saving the animal as carefully as possible proved extremely difficult.
Skilled rescue with special equipment
To gain access to the well, the roof of the workshop had to be opened. The rescuers were able to lift the animal using special lifting straps and a swap-load vehicle. They received support from experienced colleagues from the Laxenburg Volunteer Fire Department, who had already gained experience in similar operations. A first aider was present throughout the operation to ensure the safety of the emergency services.
Despite all efforts: horse dies
The rescue operation was extremely complicated and required extreme caution not to endanger the injured animal. But despite the valiant efforts of everyone involved, the horse succumbed to its injuries at the scene of the accident.
