A PFAS alarm has been raised following an investigation into wild boar meat from the Braunau district. The chemical was found in 14 out of 10 meat samples in amounts exceeding the limit. Hunting managers in the districts of Braunau, Ried and Vöcklabruck are now advised not to release wild boars into the wild.
The hunting managers of the Braunau districts and the hunting areas in Ried and Vöcklabruck bordering the Kobernausserwald are now being asked by the veterinary service of the state of Upper Austria to no longer put wild boars into circulation – or only after an investigation.
Limit exceeded
A screening of wild boars from the Weilhartforst and the Kobernwiederwald showed that of the 14 wild boar samples examined (distributed among the communities in the Braunau district), ten exceeded the limit value for PFAS (perfluoroalkyl substances) in muscle meat.
Follow the chemical and plastics industries
The reason for this is probably soil contamination in the neighboring district of Altötting (Bavaria) by the chemical and plastics industries. In Altötting there was already a corresponding warning to the yacht managers in August.
Carcinogenic
Long-term consequences caused by PFAS may include reduced immune response to vaccinations, increased cholesterol levels, toxic developmental effects in the unborn child, and cancer in adults.
