A winter storm paralyzed the southern United States on Wednesday. States of emergency have been declared in the states of Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. Schools were closed and thousands of flights had to be cancelled.
Snow even fell in the sunny state of Florida – photos from Pensacola Beach showed snow-covered beaches and palm trees. Clearance vehicles were driving around on some roads. The weather service reported about 8 inches of snow from New Orleans, Louisiana. According to American media, there have also been deaths due to the weather.
State of emergency in several states
Due to the unusual winter storm and cold for the region, the southern states of Louisiana, Georgia, Alabama, Florida and Mississippi had declared a state of emergency. The weather service warned of temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius for the northern US.
Thousands of flights cancelled
Snow and ice also hampered air traffic. About 2,300 connections were canceled nationwide on Tuesday, according to FlightAware.com. The airports of Houston, Dallas, Atlanta and New Orleans were particularly affected.
