President Donald Trump’s administration is preparing an executive order that will at least temporarily suspend government funding for certain virus research in the United States, according to a newspaper report.
This has implications for research that could make pathogens more dangerous or contagious, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
Accordingly, some viruses, such as the avian flu pathogen H5N1, could be exempted from the decision. It is said that the decree has not yet been finalized.
The US has decided to withdraw from the WHO
Only on Tuesday did Trump order the United States to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO). This has responded poorly to the coronavirus pandemic and demands unfair contributions from the US. China has four times the population of the US, but pays about 90 percent less, according to the president’s justification.
During his first term, Trump announced his withdrawal from the WHO in 2020 and officially submitted this to the organization. But his successor Joe Biden halted the move after taking office in January 2021 before the withdrawal took effect.
