After the severe storms in several regions of Austria, the cleaning work is in full swing. The damage is enormous, one death is to be regretted. And the weather conditions remain the same – thunderstorms threaten again Friday.
The joy of one, the other sadness: While the holiday season in Eastern Austria usually has the best swimming weather on Fridays, in some regions the world is literally ending. As reported, parts of Carinthia, Upper Austria, Salzburg and Styria have been affected. After the devastating storms of the past few days, which even claimed a life, the clean-up work here is in full swing.
Many households are still without electricity, masses of stone and rubble have made their way into numerous homes – those affected have nothing left. And that’s just the beginning of a summer in which we still have to reckon with some weather catastrophes, meteorologists fear. The term climate change is mentioned again and again – temperatures of up to 37 degrees are expected on Friday.
Commission even sees an ethical challenge
Speaking of climate change, the bioethics committee, based in the Federal Chancellery, now also sees the climate crisis as an “ethical challenge” and has formulated a number of demands for politicians. These range from a reduction in land use (keyword: soil sealing) to mandatory labeling of climate-damaging products in advertisements (eg low-cost airlines) to – unsurprisingly – the expansion of renewable energy sources.
