According to information from American circles, the radical Islamist Hamas has recruited between 10,000 and 15,000 new members since the start of the Gaza war. This indicates that the Islamists may remain a persistent threat to Israel, as the Reuters news agency has learned from congressional insiders.
According to US Secret Service information, the newly recruited fighters should match the Hamas fighters who have already fallen in the war. However, many of the new recruits are young and inexperienced and are only used for simple security duties. Initially, there was no official statement from the US government or Hamas.
“Recipe for an ongoing uprising”
As early as January 14, then-US Secretary of State Antony had stated that Hamas was believed to have recruited almost as many fighters in the Palestinian enclave as it lost. This is a “recipe for perpetual rebellion and eternal war,” he warned.
Basic healthcare is being restored in the Gaza Strip
Israel places the total number of fighters killed in the Gaza Strip at around 20,000. Following previous official US estimates, Hamas had more than 20,000 to 25,000 fighters before the surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Since the start of the ceasefire, the administration, run by Hamas, has quickly implemented security measures and basic care in parts of the enclave began to recover.
