Dramatic scenes took place on Saturday on the eastern shore of the Weißensee in Carinthia: two skaters were released on the not -released ice when they suddenly collapsed. Witnesses responded quickly and came for the benefit of the people.
Plus degrees and an enemy wind hit the ice surface on the eastern part of the Weißensee – but on Saturday a few skaters had ventured to the area. Near the bridge, where the layer is the thinnest, it then passed: the skaters broke inside. “Some people noticed that and immediately raised the alarm,” reports Stefan Valthe, commander of the Weißensee Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Hurried to help with a boat
One of the rescuers was Raphael Brandstetter, director of the Beach Hotel on the Weißensee: “I was informed that people were broken into the ice and that they are probably guests of our house.”
The hotel director responded immediately and ran to the lake, where he grabbed a rowing boat. “I played ad hoc and also called for ropes. I went around the middle by boat, two friends took it over and recovered the skaters, “says Brentstetter, who also praises his team:” The employees of the Strandhotel immediately covered and provided the people.
The two skaters (22 and 23) from Holland suffered hypothermia due to the cold water. They rejected further help and were released in home care.
“It is life -threatening to enter not -drained ice surfaces,” the Weißensee Fire Brigade Commander visits to carefully check whether skating is possible. On his Facebook page, the Brandbrigade urgently warns against entering the eastern part of the Weißensee.
Eislauf season will end
Already on Friday, the Wörthersee skating club had to block all under the supervision of the areas. Only on Lake Hörzendorfer could a skating operation be offered again on Saturday. No skating is currently possible on the Brennensee.
And because no distinctive cooling can be expected in the coming days, the ice rink could be again.
