Ceasefire needed – Syria is overwhelmed by a wave of violence

Date:

Syria is engulfed by a wave of violence. “Since October there has been the biggest escalation of fighting in four years,” Paulo Pinheiro, chairman of the UN Human Rights Council’s Commission of Inquiry into Syria, said on Monday.

The situation in Syria escalated again after an attack on a military academy in early October that left dozens dead. According to the latest report from the Syrian Commission, Syrian and allied Russian forces subsequently bombed at least 2,300 targets in areas controlled by the Syrian opposition. More than 500 civilians were killed or injured and about 120,000 people fled, the report said. “It should come as no surprise that the number of Syrian asylum seekers in Europe reached its highest level in seven years last October,” said Commissioner Hanny Megally.

The Gaza conflict is escalating
Since the start of the current conflict in the Gaza Strip, regional tensions have spilled over into Syria. The report cited Israeli strikes on targets linked to its arch-enemy Iran, and mutual attacks by pro-Iranian militias and US forces in Syria. There have also been increased Turkish military operations against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), fighting between the SDF and tribal militias and an increase in attacks by the terrorist group “Islamic State” (IS).

In this complex conflict situation, war crimes were likely committed against the civilian population, who were already suffering from widespread poverty and lawlessness. “The Syrian people cannot tolerate any further intensification of this devastating, ongoing war,” Pinheiro said. “Syria also urgently needs a ceasefire,” he demanded, referring to the ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas.

The conflict has been simmering since 2011
The conflict in Syria began in the spring of 2011 with protests against the government of ruler Bashar Al-Assad. The government has taken violent action against this. Today the country is divided. Assad now controls two-thirds of the country again. The northwest is under the control of opposition forces. There is still no political solution to the conflict in sight.
