Trio stuck on mountain – extreme tour fails: experts shake their heads

Date:

Hardly anyone knows the Hohe Munde (2,662 meters) better than the Tyrolean mountain rescuer Albert Neuner. Leutascher cannot understand why the three Germans who had to be rescued by police helicopter on Saturday dared to make the risky descent from a steep slope.

Spectacular footage shows the German trio living in Innsbruck on Saturday and trapped on the northern flank of the Hohe Munde above the Gaistal. As reported, the tourers (three men, aged 28, 31 and 32) wanted to ski down the flank from the western summit of the Munde.

Because the rope got stuck in an abseiling section and had to be left behind, the three of them got stuck in the rocks. They raised the alarm and the Libelle Tirol police helicopter flew them to the Rauthhütte with the rope.

“Just bad luck with rope”
“The experienced alpinists simply had bad luck with the rope,” says Daniel Kölli, head of the Alpine police in the Innsbruck district. They would have done everything right – and also raised the alarm in time before dark.

route is becoming increasingly popular
“This slope, which is described in a guide to steep wall hikes in the Mieming Mountains, is being ridden more and more often,” says Albert Neuner. He is not only a mountain rescuer from Leutasch, but also one of the most in-depth experts on the Hohe Munde.

As such, he is critical of the efforts of the trio who were ultimately rescued. “There is simply far too little snow on the Hohe Munde at the moment,” he says, who cannot understand the German tour given the current conditions.

On the flank there are three stands for abseiling – 30 and 50 meters respectively. The Germans were already over it. “Where they got stuck, you can easily ski down in normal snow conditions,” he said. Besides, they were too far west.

“I had to wait for years”
For this tour it is essential to view the flank of the Gaistal in advance. Then you can see if the snow conditions are suitable. Neuner does not know whether the Germans did that. However, the expert advises this to anyone who wants to do the route described in the travel guide in the future.

“I have skied next to it in this area myself and had to wait years until the conditions were finally right,” Neuner points out to potential steep wall riders.
