Expert explains – meeting: why are storm disasters increasing?

Date:

After the severe flooding around Lake Ossiacher See in Carinthia, many people ask themselves the same question: why are there more serious weather disasters in the region around Treffen?

Meter-high waves of mud, torrential rains, suffering and devastation – it wasn’t the first time the neighboring valley was hit hard by storms, though the scale this time was a 100-year event. Why does it affect this region so often? “First of all: it is especially unfortunate for the residents – because the weather conditions here are not that unusual,” says meteorologist Nikolas Zimmermann of the Ubimet weather service.

Rained as much in one day as in a whole month
“The Geländetal lies exactly between Upper Carinthia, which is prone to storms, and Lower Carinthia, which is quite calm. This time, it was mainly high-energy air coming from northern Italy with a low point.” It discharged through storms – for hours. During Wednesday night’s heavy thunderstorms, more rain fell than in an entire month. Zimmermann: “In Arriach it was 70 liters per square meter within an hour, no floor can match that.”

What’s the weather like in the disaster area? Friday would be mostly sunny, but there is a chance of thunder again later in the afternoon. “But we only expect short showers, luckily the weather is different,” said the weather expert.
