Since January 26, more than 2300 earthquakes have been registered on Santorini and the surrounding regions – a number that has even experienced experts. “The intensity and frequency of the earthquakes are exceptional, but not without historical parallels,” explains geosphere geologist Helmut Hausmann in an interview.
“Krone”: How do you interpret the unusually high number of more than 2300 registered earthquakes since January 26, 2025? Are there historic parallels in the region?
Helmut Hausmann: Stronger earthquakes and swarms of earthquake for a few months are not unusual in this region. In this case, the intensity and strength of earthquakes has increased again and again since 27 January. The population on Santorini constantly feels the shocks of belly, the epicentra of which are about ten to 30 kilometers northeast of the island. It is in particular uncertainty in connection with a possible tsunami (as with the strong earthquake from 1956 with Magnitude 7.7 south of the island of Amorgos). A possible eruption under water from the Colombos volcano north of Santorini, as in 1650 AD, would also be dangerous. The strongest earthquake of the past few days has reached the size of more than 5.0 and felt about 300 kilometers, including to Athens and Izmir.
