UN troop in the neighborhood – dozens of dead after attacks on villages in the Congo

Date:

In the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, at least 35 civilians were killed in attacks on a group of villages. Armed men are said to have been executed on Tuesday and set up houses, said the head of the villages involved in the province of Ituri, Jean Vianey, on Tuesday. Many victims are burned in their homes and there are also injuries. The attack was committed on Monday evening.

Soldiers from the land and UN vredes enforcers who were stationed about three kilometers away, would not have been intervened. The army and the UN Vredesmission Monusco initially did not respond to a request for comment.

Radical militias must be responsible
Vianey blamed the Miliz Codeco hunter for the attack. It is one of the many armed groups fighting for land in the region and access to raw materials. In the past Codeco has been held responsible for attacks by the UN, which can be war crimes and crimes against humanity. Among them were attacks on the HEMA population group, which according to Vianey was the goal of the attack this time.

The UN recently warned an extension of the conflict in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, after the M23 rebel group had conquered the city of Goma after violent fights at the end of Jćnner. The government in Kinshasa accuses the adjacent Rwanda to use the M23 to plunder valuable mineral deposits. Rwanda, on the other hand, said it defends itself and the Tutsi -Atnian group.
