Working on the “Totempaal” climber had to be saved by Rock Needle

Date:

The 65 meter high rock pin “Totem pole” is a popular destination for climbers – but two athletes almost did the spectacular rock formation. Her ropes became entangled in the strong wind. The helpers had to start a risky rescue operation.

The two climbers found a little protection on a small ride and called the salvation early on Wednesday evening. Not an easy enterprise: a helicopter who hurried to the duo that was at a dizzying height to help cancel the use because of the wind.

Rescue by helicopter and boat impossible
The rock needle is washed away by the sea and very smooth. Even if the weather is good, it is difficult to reach from the coast. The emergency services still tried to reach the cliffs with a police boat. “This was also not successful because of the considerable and dangerous waves,” said Callum Herbert of the local police.

Finally, athletes from the “climbing club of Tasmania” climbed on the “Totempaal” despite the unfavorable weather conditions and darkness. They were able to bring the climbers back to the mainland with rescue character back to the foot of the rock needle and over cliffs. The two survived the test unharmed – but were hungry, tired and hypotherm.
