No food, no water – I: survived 7 days on ledge after crash

Date:

The hope of finding him alive was no longer too great. Nevertheless, emergency services in Italy have continued to search tirelessly for a missing hiker from Torreano, who has been missing since last Saturday on Monte Matajur in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. A flight along a via ferrata on Saturday morning finally brought certainty: the 31-year-old is alive!

According to media reports, the engineer left for the mountains last Saturday. Since then there is no sign of life from him. The 31-year-old’s car was discovered two days later in a small village. From there, it is said, he began the walking tour.

Route info on computer
Hundreds of emergency services then searched for the missing person, two helicopters flew over the area repeatedly and drones were also deployed. Rescue workers from Slovenia were also called in, as Monte Matajur is right on the border. The engineer’s own computer provided information about the possible route the 31-year-old had planned for his tour, media reported. There the planned route was saved.

Area dense and steep
However, the area through which the via ferrata chosen by the young man leads posed major challenges for emergency services. The Monte Matajur is densely vegetated and steep in this area. As the days passed and there was still no sign of life from the 31-year-old engineer, many assumed the worst. But on Saturday morning, the crew of a helicopter on the via ferrata should actually discover the missing person on a ledge for a week.

Backpack lost in crash
Reportedly, during his climb last weekend, the 31-year-old lost his footing on the steep terrain and slid down. He lost his backpack with food and cell phone. He eventually landed on a ledge, nearly unscathed, but unable to move forward or back. His condition was described as good given the many days without food or drink. However, he was taken to the hospital in Udine for examination.
