When flooding broke out over parts of Carinthia on Wednesday night, a family had to take refuge on the first floor of their home. Long, anxious wait for the first helpers to arrive.
Marlene Zlattinger (37) has spent anxious hours with her four-year-old daughter and her parents. The family managed to escape the mudslide on the first floor at the last minute. “My mother woke us up at 1:30 am on Wednesday night because she noticed the water on the ground floor. Then everything went so fast. We fled to the first floor, then the front door broke, the flood just rushed in. Half way up the stairwell came the water also up”, says the single mother.
The night was terrible. “When it got light, Dad and a visiting friend climbed over the roof into the yard. The cars were gone. Just chaos everywhere. We had no electricity and the emergency call didn’t work either.” The family had to wait another night before the 37-year-old was flown out of the house with her mother and daughter.
“We were allowed to bring our two cats. Dad and his friend stayed. We don’t know if we can go back. It is no longer safe in the wasteland. We now live with an aunt in a very small space. How do I get to work in Klagenfurt without a car?”
