Blood storage levels in Austria have now reached a dramatic low. This circumstance now compels the federal government to resort to donations to the population. The country is heading for a blood crisis.
“The situation is dramatic, blood supplies are running out in our hospitals. I urge you: take your time, donate blood and save the life of a fellow human being. Let’s look to each other and help each other. That makes our country strong “, says Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP).
“Donating blood saves lives. Now we are all challenged: we want everyone who can appeal to make their blood donation available to the Austrian Red Cross. This shows solidarity and means a lot, especially for the sick and injured,” added Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens).
About every 90 seconds a can is used and now there is a risk of an acute bottleneck. For those who want to donate, the Austrian Red Cross is offering both online and telephone registration offers, it said in a broadcast.
