The attack in a shopping center in Copenhagen on Sunday evening was not an act of terrorism. According to the Danish police, the suspected gunman shot random victims at random. He’s already been arrested.
“There is no evidence in the investigation, documents or testimony that could prove it was terrorism,” Chief Inspector Soren Thomassen said Monday. The alleged perpetrator fired randomly at people. After the killing, Danish police found a gun and a knife in the 22-year-old suspect’s apartment. He also had access to a gun, but probably no permission to do so.
Probably no accomplices
According to Thomassen, the Dane probably acted alone, as there were no indications of accomplices. The man has been in a psychiatric hospital in the past. The chief inspector declined to comment on a possible motive in Monday’s press conference. According to eyewitnesses, he had tried to lure people into the mall by, for example, telling them that his weapon was fake. More than a hundred people eventually fled after the first shots, the Danish media reported.
young people among fatalities
However, three people were killed. It concerns a 47-year-old man with Russian citizenship living in Denmark and two 17-year-olds. At least four other people were injured. Among them are a 40-year-old and a 19-year-old Danish woman, a 50-year-old man and a 16-year-old woman from Sweden. Other people suffered minor injuries as they fled the mall in panic.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen condemned the act as a “cruel attack”. “We were all brutally snatched from the radiant summer we had just begun.” The act was incomprehensible, heartbreaking and meaningless.
