Great excitement in the city council of Eberndorf (Carinthia). One of the two high schools should go on the recommendation of the state. The parents are outraged.
There were heated discussions in the Eberndorf city council on Thursday evening. The mandate holders were tasked with deciding which of the two secondary schools should be closed. Because there is currently a shortage of students to be able to continue to operate both locations.
1.5 million euros costs
“This topic has been virulent for years. Now a decision must finally be made,” says education director Isabella Penz. In the vote on whether to close Eberndorf with 80 students or Kühnsdorf (170 students), 17 of the only 20 delegates present voted to leave Kühnsdorf open.
“This decision is not logically justifiable for us,” says FP councilor Kajetan Glantschnig. According to him, the rail connection also speaks for Kühnsdorf. Glantschnig: “There is no reason to close the better developed and more central location.” According to calculations, the move of the Eberndorf students to Kühnsdorf would cost 1.5 million euros. Conversely, twelve million would have to be invested.
Parents are outraged
Also many parents cannot follow the logic of the city council and protest against its decision. However, the school community association has the last word. Chairman Stefan Visotschnig: “First of all, the costs have to be discussed. The existing room size and the transport connections at the location will also be decisive.”
