One shark could be responsible for two deadly attacks in Egypt. As reported, two women died – one of them: a 68-year-old former Green Party politician from Tyrol. But how do you behave when you encounter a shark? An expert provides answers.
Shouting, blood-red water, startled faces all around. Women in Egypt were twice the victims of shark attacks last weekend. While the death of Elisabeth S. from Kramsach (Tyrol) was brutally captured on video, the body of a Romanian woman was found a short time later – just 600 meters from “crime scene” near Hurghada. According to shark expert Dr. Michael Mitic for one and the same animal.
It was quite “unusual” that it traveled in such shallow water. Mitic also doesn’t know why the shark was there. For example, impurities that have been dumped from a ship are possible, the shark can also be sick and therefore behave that way.
“Don’t Swim Away”
If you come across a shark on vacation, it’s best to stand vertically in the water and look directly at the shark, says Mitic. “Never swim away,” he warns, adding: “There are about 100 to 150 attacks with 10 deaths per year. You are more likely to die in an accident on your way to vacation than to be killed by a shark. ”
