Five highlights of the report
The report came to five central findings: in 2024 the global average temperature was approximately 1.55 degrees above the pre -industrial level – a new maximum value. Over the past eight years, record values ​​have brought for the thermal content of the oceans, which absorb 90 percent of the surplus heat. The ice costs in Antarctica also fell at historic lows, while Gletscher lost so much mass worldwide than ever in a three -year period.

Moreover, the sea level is increasing faster than ever: since 1993 the annual increase has more than doubled to 4.7 millimeters. The figures are clear – the climate is warming up at a worrying pace.

The trend to higher temperatures will stop
The climate reacts slowly to changes: even if the emissions of greenhouse gases were abruptly stopped – an extremely unlikely scenario – the temperature rise would continue to increase for decades.

2024 was the first year since the start of the measurement, in which the global average temperature was more than 1.5 degrees above the pre -industrial level. This set a new record – it was the hottest year ever. The Climate Agreement of Paris 2015 was aimed at limiting the global warming as much as possible to this value.

However, the agreement refers to long -term average values ​​for at least 20 years. According to the world organization for Meteorology (WMO), the current average is between 1.34 and 1.41 degrees above the pre -industrial level, depending on the calculation method. In addition to climate change, the particularly strong increase in temperature 2023 and 2024 also contributed to natural factors such as the weather pattern El Niño and increased solar activity, as the report says.
