Arantxa Tapia, Minister of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment of the Basque government, has asked Mercedes Vitoria and the unions to admit, before the negotiating table convened today, “to bring the positions closer together that lead to an agreement”.
In an interview on Radio Euskadi’s ‘Boulevard’ programme, Tapia said that “the good news is that the table is coming together again. We understand the complexity, but both sides have to give in to positions that lead to agreement.”
So, “being good news,” the counselor has asked to “walk in that quest for agreement.”
The Basque minister also stressed that the 1.2 billion investment announced by the multinational is “an opportunity that no one can afford to miss, neither the workers, nor the institutions, nor the factory itself. Therefore, we call on you to be prepared to agree to it”.
Along the same lines, he added that “The Basque Country cannot afford to lose that investment”, with what it entails, in direct and indirect employment, in the development of the electric car industry, etc.
Finally, he reiterated that they are confident that “this approach to positions, which is complex, can start from today”.
The Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu and Arantxa Tapia are in Germany to meet the management of Mercedes Benz and the commitment of the Basque government, the provincial council of Álava and the city council of Vitoria-Gasteiz to continue working for the automotive sector.
According to the Lehendakari when announcing the trip, “we are faced with an opportunity for Mercedes’ 5,000 direct and 30,000 indirect employees, and to ensure the future of more than 600 parts suppliers we have in Araba and Euskadi”.
