Infectious disease – diphtheria patient disappeared from shelter quarters

Date:

Where did a 25-year-old Afghan from asylum seekers’ center Thalham in St. Georgen im Attergau (Upper Austria) disappear? The refugee is infected with the infectious disease diphtheria and is now wanted by the police.

The asylum seeker had been examined in Klagenfurt on June 30 because of a blister on his leg before being transferred to Thalham. Diphtheria pathogens were detected in the smear. Whether he knew this is unclear.

Didn’t come back from exit
Anyway, when the Afghan was transferred to Upper Austria on July 1, he said nothing about it and declined any inquiry. When the diagnosis came from Carinthia in Upper Austria on July 4, the Afghan had already disappeared, having fled the dust at 1 p.m. at the first exit. Now the police are looking for him to prevent broadcasts.

The country announced that the close contacts in the asylum center are now being vaccinated and that they have been ordered to monitor their health for 10 days. No quarantine was declared. The risk for the population in Upper Austria of becoming infected with the pathogen is classified as low, as the vaccination coverage against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough and polio is high. However, diphtheria is a notifiable disease.
