Nearly ten years ago, on the day before Christmas, three churches in Amstetten, Lower Austria, were set on fire. While the flames went out in two churches themselves, the monastery church was badly damaged. The suspected perpetrator has since been arrested.
The monastery church, the city parish church and the Herz Jesukerk in Amstetten were hit by the arson attacks on 23 December 2012. While the two fires in the parish church of St. Stephan and the Herz-Jesu-Kirche went out on their own, the monastery church was badly damaged. As Leopold Bien, spokesman for the public prosecutor’s office of St. Pölten, confirmed on Tuesday, an arrest had now been made.
“Against milder means” in general
However, the suspect was released “on milder means”. However, there is still a strong suspicion. According to Bien, the only possible reason for detention in the case was the risk of absconding. This was replaced by conditions by the court. The investigation into the cause continues.
The spokesman for the authorities gave no further details about the suspect. According to an online report by the “Kurier”, a 30-year-old man was informed shortly after the arson, based on witness statements. Now there are new clues.
