It is a worrying trend: the fertility percentage of Italy fell to only 1.18 children per woman in 2024 and is therefore under the previous low point of 1.19 in 1995 and is displayed on Monday, information from the Statistics Office. Only 370,000 babies were born in the country last year – this corresponds to a decrease of 2.6 percent compared to 2023. In 1995, 526,000 children were born in Italy. Compared to 2008, there are more than 183,000 births less (minus 31.8 percent).
Italy can still have a negative record: the average age of women at the birth of their first child is now 31.8 years old. Against this background, the Italian families are becoming smaller. The average budget had 2.2 members from 2023 to 2024, compared to 2.6 members 20 years ago. For this goal, the number of foreign residents in Italy will increase to 5.308 million in 2024, ie to 166,000 more than in the previous year.
The number of deaths also decreased
For this, the number of deaths fell last year and 3.1 percent compared to 2023. This corresponds to a difference between births and deaths of 281,000. According to the Statistics Office, the life expectancy of the Italians rose to 83.4 years last year, almost five months more than in 2023.
