Anyone who has been fined 10,000 euros and drives without a license would do well to behave as inconspicuously as possible. If you think so. But a 24-year-old took an opposite strategy in Vienna-Brigittenau on Wednesday night – albeit unsuccessfully. Before the eyes of uniformed men, he cranked the engine of his Mercedes CLK at the intersection of Hellwagstrasse and Engerthstrasse and then raced through Vienna at tremendous speeds.
The officers tried to stop the car, but initially without success, police spokesman Markus Dittrich reported. The 24-year-old drove off, sometimes accelerating to speeds of up to 160 km/h. The police gave chase and sent out reinforcements.
The fugitive ran over a traffic light when it was red, jumped full speed over a speed bump, threw sparks and tried to lose the officers several times by braking hard and then accelerating. However, this failed.
The police eventually brought the 24-year-old to a dead end. He tried to back up his car, but officers forced him out at gunpoint and arrested him. The reason for the flight soon became clear: the 24-year-old did not have a valid driver’s license and administrative fines of more than 10,000 euros.
