SOS Children’s Village is not only taking care of adults, but also children. The aid organization warns of the psychological effects of global political turbulence – even among Austrian children.
“The whole world events are new to all of us and also have a huge impact on the children in Austria. It is important that we adults first regulate and calm ourselves, this is the only way we can give our children the necessary support,” emphasizes SOS Children’s Village Managing Director Rudisch.
Don’t leave children alone
“Our task is to give confidence and to point out that there are peace movements and peaceful politicians in many levels that act in a responsible manner and try to find diplomatic solutions,” Rudisch emphasizes. It is important to talk to children and not to leave them alone with the intensive and often overwhelming messages, the psychotherapist demands.
Traumatized children in Ukraine
In Ukraine, many children already showed language shortages due to the stressful situation. “Some have stopped talking entirely because of the traumatic experiences they have had to experience in recent years,” emphasizes the emergency aid coordinator of SOS Children’s Village in Ukraine, Calyna Posvaliuk.
“Great fear of loud sounds”
Because of the constant fear of explosions, many children also developed “a great fear of loud sounds”. This must be processed psychotherapeutically and the children will accompany and influence for a long time, said Posvaliuk.
Exchange with other children helps
Children need stability, a good environment and especially the exchange with colleagues. “Above all, we notice that the exchange with other children who have experienced the children very well and that they also open themselves more easily in a conversation with their colleagues,” said Posvaliuk.
According to the organization, around 2,000 children in Ukraine currently have to do without parent care due to the circumstances of the war. Donations are urgently needed.
