The Earth is Warming – New Climate Report: “Facing a Catastrophe”

Date:

The earth is getting hotter and hotter. People, animals and nature suffer from it. The latest climate report now looks at the measures that will reduce the climate crisis and its consequences. The third and final part of the latest assessment report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) will be published on Monday. Representatives of the 195 member states met for two weeks to decide on the summary for political decision-makers.

While the first two parts of the most recent status report focused on the state of the climate and opportunities for adaptation, the focus is now on ways to mitigate the climate crisis. 278 authors from more than 60 countries worked on the report.

Personal Lifestyle Changes
Climate-neutral energies, for example from sun and wind, but also energy savings in industry, transport and households can contribute to reducing the climate crisis. But personal changes in lifestyle, such as eating less meat and using the bicycle more often than the car, can also make a difference. “We know we are in for a catastrophe,” UN Deputy Secretary-General Ligia Noronha warned at the start of the deliberations.

dramatic words
The second part of the sixth status report was presented at the end of February. It warns in drastic terms that without strong countermeasures, the Earth could in the future be transformed into a planet uninhabitable for humans. A summary report of all three parts of the report will be presented in the autumn, well before the next climate conference (COP27) in Egypt.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change presents a new status report on the state of research on the climate crisis approximately every six years. The tenor of the scientists, who have evaluated thousands of studies for their reports, has always been the same.

But the warnings are getting louder and clearer: the fight against the climate crisis needs to be stepped up significantly and is urgently needed. Despite all the urgent warnings, global emissions of climate-damaging greenhouse gases have been increasing more or less constantly and are at record highs.
